That’s the island that contains both Haiti and the Dominican Republic, for those of you who are geographically challenged. Hurricane MATTHEW. (Click the images for better views.)
Reports from an Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that maximum sustained winds are near 145 mph (230 km/h) with higher gusts. Matthew is a dangerous category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are possible during the next couple of days, but Matthew is expected to remain a powerful hurricane through at least Wednesday.
It can be a bit difficult to make out the outlines of the islands in the animated image. On the left at the top of the frame you can see one island divided roughly in half. That is Hispaniola, with The Dominican Republic to the west, and Haiti on the eastern part of the island. The large island at the top right of the frame is Cuba.
