My guess is that the teacher in question had a weak password. (Pet name, kid’s name, spouse’s name, etc.) 13-Year-Old Allegedly Hacked Teacher Account to Create Student ‘Hit List’.
A 13-year-old is currently under investigation after he allegedly used a teacher’s credentials to hack into his school district’s computing system to steal fellow students’ personal information and create a “hit list.”
It dosen’t say, and the original article at the Columbus, Ohio ABC affiliate also doesn’t say, how he got that teachers login and password. If I had to guess (which I do) I would say the logins are known (you have to be able to send emails to the teacher after all), and her password was easy to guess based on information known about her by her class. Which is why you should never use your pet’s name as a PW.
The good news is they stopped this kid before he shot up the kids who were bullying him. (Don’t we have anti-bullying programs today?) The bad news is I doubt anyone will improve the level of their security.
