Cops And Domestic Violence

JusticeThey usually get a free pass.

First up, a story from Oklahoma. New details in OKCPD officer arrest for domestic abuse.

According to the records, the victim told investigators Maldonado said things like “I’m gonna kill you, you’re dead, I’s [sic] gonna kill you tonight, your white privilege is over.”

Innocent until proved guilty… It is somewhat amazing that he was arrested.

Next up a case from California. LAPD officer accused of repeatedly beating, severely injuring girlfriend. The most interesting part of the story is what they don’t say.

So. Three times he’s accused of beating her since April. Only the most recent incident, that resulted in “great bodily injury to the victim,” got the attention of prosecutors. The two previous assaults were not interesting.

LAPD has a “statement” about how this kind of thing won’t be tolerated. Except it apparently was tolerated since April. I’m a bit surprised he didn’t kill her, or that any part of the system acted before he killed her. Of course the story isn’t over yet.

For my view on how cops are generally given a free pass by other cops, see Were there two sets of rules regarding domestic violence? That is about the story of Drew Peterson, a cop from Bollingbrook, Illinois, who wasn’t called to account until after his 4th wife died. And they never did find any evidence about her, but after she disappeared, they reopened the investigation into his 3rd wife’s death, and convicted him. There were calls to 911, but no reports and no arrests. Multiple. Calls. To. 911. But the cops were not going to arrest one of their own! You don’t think the rules apply to cops, do you? Rules are for the Little People.
