Because keeping police out of violent communities is sure to make some people happy. Just not everyone. Baltimore Residents Now Upset At Soaring Homicide Rates After City Acted On BLM Demands To Limit Police Presence In Certain Communities.
If you’re confused on the subject of Baltimore, look up the Freddie Grey incident from 2015. The riots, as always destroyed the parts of the city where the upset people live.
Because whenever Liberal policies result in completely foreseeable consequences, the media and the politicrats are shocked to discover that “water is wet‡.”
Following the anti-police riots, city officials seemingly gave in to the Black Lives Matter demands, and have enacted policies that would limit the presence of police officers in neighborhoods like the one in which Freddie Gray was arrested.
The apparent result is a skyrocketing of homicides and the creation of an atmosphere in which it is no longer safe for citizens to walk down the street. With the weakened police presence in high-crime rate areas, much like when ISIS filled the vacuum left behind when Obama withdrew American troops from the Middle East, gangs of roving thugs have made it their priority to terrorize their communities.
Black Lives Matter can now celebrate in achieving its goal as Baltimore has now broken the national record for homicides with 55.8 killings per 100,000 people.
For comparison purposes. Chicago has a crime rate of about 18.5 per 100,000 residents. (It depends on the population numbers you use, and the homicide numbers, and the Chicago PD has been under pressure to cook the books on homicide, and clearance, but then there is always HeyJackass!) New York City (based on the Compstat numbers, and Wiki population data) has a crime rate of 3.7 per 100,000.
The country of Venezuela has a murder rate of about 56.3 per 100,000, and Honduras has a rate of 41.7 per 100,000 according to The World Atlas.
Now for reasons I don’t understand, the link at the top is mostly to 2017 data. But 2019 data exists – it comes from the Baltimore Sun: 2019 closes with 348 homicides in Baltimore, second deadliest year on record. 2nd to 1993 when the city had a population larger than it does today (by about 125,000 people).
The year had already set a grim record of 57 killings per 100,000 people, the city’s worst homicide rate on record. Then, killings went on for eight more days.
Press conferences were held where officials promised “new efforts to catch killers,” because the clearance rate is about 31 percent.
Not happy with the results they have achieved to date, BLM wants more. (Back to the first link at the top…)
However, chapters of the Black Lives Matter movement, including Baltimore and Chicago, have issued demands to have the police forces in each city abolished completely.
Be careful what you wish for because sometimes you just might get it.
And of course, Murder isn’t the only crime impacted by the policing vacuum, it just seems to be the only one that gets any attention.
‡ The “water is wet” line is not quite a quote from “The Gods of the Copybook Headings” by Rudyard Kipling. It is in full after the break.
“The Gods of the Copybook Headings” first published in 1919
AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.
We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.
We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.
With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.
When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “Stick to the Devil you know.”
On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “The Wages of Sin is Death.”
In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “If you don’t work you die.”
Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.
As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool’s bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!
