Victim versus Criminal

CuffsThe media in Oklahoma seems to get it right. NORMAN SHOOTING: Two people injured in shooting in Norman, police say

The media often confuse who is a victim in a self-defense shooting.

According to Norman police, the initial investigation indicates that the victim, 23-year-old Dalton Deleon, was inside his home when he heard someone rummaging through his vehicle parked in his driveway. He left the home to stop the suspect, later identified as a 17-year-old male, police said.

The teen, also armed with a handgun, tried to run away from the scene. Police said Deleon continued to chase him eastbound on Boyd Street to the intersection of Merrywood Lane, where the suspect pulled out a handgun and shot at Deleon.

Both were wounded. The victim was treated and released. The criminal was treated and booked into the county jail on burglary and assault with a deadly weapon.

Self-defense is a human-right. Good Guys 1, Bad Guys 0.

Austin Discovers That Police Are Required for 911 Calls to Be Answered

Who do they think responds to 911 calls? Austin Police Association believes recent 911 response time delays are the result of understaffing

First, why is there a staffing problem? Well aside from the War on Cops, that is…

Gov. Greg Abbott chimed in on the issue Monday, tweeting in part, “This is caused by Austin’s cuts to police funding & it endangers lives in Austin. The State must consider laws that take over policing parts of Austin.”

The Austin City Council voted to cut some funds from APD in August. A total of $150 million from APD’s budget will be reallocated. Of that, $49 million will be diverted to other programs, $21 million was reallocated immediately and $80 million will be reallocated later. Those cuts also included cutting some future cadet classes.

Add to that the continuing attrition in the ranks.

Casaday said that the canceled classes, coupled with what he believes is an increase in APD officers resigning, is causing the recent rise in 911 response times.

Recently in downtown Austin, when a “shots fired” call came in, there were no officers available to respond, because they were already dealing with other situations.

And if you don’t have a shots fired kind of emergency, you will wait for cops to show up. Hours for burglary, trespass assault, etc.

So. You need cops to answer 911 calls. And if you make cops think that they are not welcome in your city, they might just leave. So how is that defunding of police thing working out?

Red Right Hand

I thought this song was written for the soundtrack for the first Hellboy movie directed by Guillermo del Toro. That was before I tripped over it on social media a while back.

This is “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds from the 1994 album Let Love In. It was released as a single months after the album came out.

I had hoped to include a link to the 2004 Hellboy scene, but I can’t find that particular part of the movie…

Fact Checking Biden’s Tax Plan

But then lying is what politicians do. Fact Check: Yes, Biden’s Plan Would ‘Increase Taxes on Average for All Income Groups

Biden and the Dems keep saying that only people making more than $400K would see a tax increase.

According to an analysis from the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, Biden’s $3.2 trillion tax increase package would reduce incomes, reduce GDP growth, and kill jobs:

Please Stand BySo, I am still looking for my next blogging home. Joomla looked promising, but in the end their terms and conditions manage to be even more vague than the WordPress/Automatic terms and conditions, and yet have even more emphasis on “If we don’t like what you write, you’re history.” And they really should, across the board, be labeled “Lack of Privacy Policy,” though they are not in F*c*book’s league when it comes to “We own all your data.”

And since I’ve been told by (two?) people at what passes for support to, “Shut up and do what we tell you to do,” since this whole thing exploded, it is pretty clear I will not be using WP in the long run.

Anyway, on with the linkage.

Stories of Self-defense: International Edition

crime scene tapeThis story is from Brazil. Shop owner shoots dead three robbers inside Brazil clothes store

CCTV shows how the owner calmly walked out from behind the counter, causing the thieves to back away, before pulling out his own handgun from his waistband.

As he goes to grab the weapon, one of the thieves opens fire, shattering a display case just over the man’s left shoulder.

The store owner then fires several bullets, which struck all three of the men as they were attempting to flee.

Self-defense is a human-right. And Brazil has recently made some effort to see that it is your legal right, though I have no idea how this will play out in the long run.

Venezuela Is Out of Gas

And all other petroleum products. Venezuela, Once an Oil Giant, Reaches the End of an Era – The New York Times

It is a textbook case of socialism leading to decay. Well, and the sanctions over human-rights abuses and election fraud haven’t helped.

For the first time in a century, there are no rigs searching for oil in Venezuela.

Wells that once tapped the world’s largest crude reserves are abandoned or left to flare toxic gases that cast an orange glow over depressed oil towns.

Refineries that once processed oil for export are rusting hulks, leaking crude that blackens shorelines and coats the water in an oily sheen.

Because the bad capitalists, and all the technicians they hired to keep stuff repaired, fled that socialist hellhole years ago.

And of course, decaying infrastructure leads to ecological problems.

No oil means no money, and not just to maintain the infrastructure.

The country now has the highest poverty rate in Latin America, overtaking Haiti this year, according to a recent study by Venezuela’s three leading universities.

Hat tip to Babalú Blog, who notes.

Venezuela is not just out of oil. It has also destroyed a once prosperous and well educated middle class. Many from that middle class now live in the U.S. and support President Trump because they understand socialism in a way that few U.S. college students do.

Can’t Step on the Toes of Another Lawyer

JusticeThey left a monster free because they didn’t want to “second guess” another lawyer. Manhattan federal prosecutors declined to pursue Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell case in 2016: sources

Because “second guessing” a colleague wouldn’t show proper respect to a fellow member of the cloth the fraternity the brotherhood the profession.

Some people think I am using hyperbole when I write about the arrogance of attorneys.

Yet more rehashing of Epstein’s reign of terror. But the most insane part of the story is why the US Prosecutor in New York didn’t take action for 2 years.

“This was not a situation where we were dealing with people who didn’t care. I never thought they didn’t believe our story. I never had any doubt they were sympathetic, even outraged by it. They simply seemed to feel they couldn’t be seen as second guessing what the U.S. Attorney in Florida had done,” [Lawyer David] Boies said. [My emphasis. Z-Deb]

The ONLY reason that they decided that they had to “second guess” another attorney, is because the Miami Herald shined a great big, embarrassing light on the situation.

The office’s attitude changed after the Miami Herald highlighted the “Perversion of Justice” that resulted in Epstein receiving a slap on the wrist.

I mean be fair; that was seriously bad publicity.

The Criminal Justice System. It is a “system,” which means it takes care of itself first. It is often Criminal. And it has almost no interest in Justice.

Twitter versus The Hunter Biden Story

Nevermore facepalmSmitty over at The Other McCain notes – Twitter Getting Its Hunter Biden On

The ever increasing effort by Twitter to throttle and otherwise kill the Hunter Biden story is just drawing that much more attention.

Philadelphia’s Decline

Another Democrat-run City, another crime epidemic. Philadelphia: Murder City, U.S.A. : The Other McCain

The pattern is getting hard to miss. Chicago. Baltimore. New York. And now Philadelphia.

If you want to stay alive, stay out of Philadelphia. Earlier this month, the total of murders in the city surpassed last year’s total.

Oh, the powers-that-be in Philadelphia are focused on inanimate objects.

Note the phrase “gun violence,” as if firearms were the cause of this “epidemic.” The human factor — the criminals who actually commit these murders — disappears in this mechanical view.

Click thru for the rest.

So Who Did the Lenient Rules Help, In the End?

CRIME SCENE DO NOT CROSSBecause it wasn’t him. Ex-felon arrested 28 times shot while committing Kinsey burglary dies in Dothan hospital.

For those of you who are geographically impaired, Dothan, Alabama is a small college town roughly north of Panama City, Florida and roughly south of Montgomery along US 231. They have a couple of decent places to eat, and college radio station that isn’t awful. Or they had, I have not been to Dothan in a very long time. 15 years give or take.

First let’s talk about the dead-guy.

He was convicted in 2018 on four counts of drug possession and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

According to the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles, he had served two years of his sentence before entering the federal release program in March 2020.

So a release program. It was no doubt supposed to be good for him. It wasn’t. It was the worst failure imaginable. If he had even had to serve HALF of his sentence, he might still be alive.

And is anyone surprised by his lack of reform? Can you spell “recidivist?”

Now let’s talk about Sunday.

Dantrail Mills, 34, a habitual lawbreaker, forced his way into a family’s home – first throwing a bicycle at the master bedroom window where a couple and toddler were sleeping, according to Houston County Sheriff’s Office investigators.

He, then, kicked the door in and shot at the male homeowner, missing him. The bullet went through a wall and through a crib in another room.

That is when the resident returned fire.

Alabama has a Stand Your Ground law, and this clearly applies, at least according the Houston County Sheriff Donald Valenza.

Among other scenarios, the law states that a person is legally presumed to be justified in using deadly physical force in self-defense or the defense of another person if the person reasonably believes that another person is in the process of unlawfully and forcefully entering, or has unlawfully and forcefully entered, a dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle.

Self-defense is a human-right, and Alabama is not New Jersey.

What Happens When You Don’t Enforce the Law?

JusticeYou get more law-breaking. Man charged with pepper-spraying his *third* CTA bus driver of the year

You could also file this under “If you give a mouse a cookie, he’s gonna want a glass of milk.”

He first pepper-sprayed a bus driver in March. Then he did it again on September 2nd. Finally 12 days later it was time for number 3.

A Chicago man is being held in lieu of $100,000 bail after he allegedly pepper-sprayed his third CTA bus of the year. Cook County Judge John Lyke also ordered 46-year-old Erick Robie to stay away from CTA property if he can post a 10% deposit bond.

“You gotta walk, or get a car, or Uber or something,” Lyke said.

Hat tip to Second City Cop, who notes that he should have been charged with a felony for the first and second incidents, not a misdemeanors. He terms this “Another Crimesha Failure.” Crimesha being Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.

But Crimesha knows better than the legislature and refused to charge this asshole appropriately.

Anyone know why bus drivers’ Union isn’t raising holy Hell about that?

Do You Still Think the System Will Protect You?

It seems to be doing a particularly bad job in this case. How double killer who shot his grandparents and set their home on fire was released unsupervised from mental health ward before embarking on a new drug-fuelled crime spree.

He killed his grandparents and set their house on fire. He was not guilty due to mental illness, and he was supposed to be in a hospital. But just like keeping felons in prison is unfair, keeping crazy people separated from society is also unfair. Or something.

Konidaris pleaded not guilty to the murders of his grandparents on mental health grounds and was ordered to be supervised for 25 years at a psychiatric facility in 2014.

He was granted permission to leave the mental facility on escorted outings in 2016, and was eventually allowed to roam the streets unsupervised in 2019.

So 25 years turned into 5 years.

During his crime spree in September 2019, Konidaris told staff he was going to see his parents and about be back by 9pm, 9 News reported.

Instead, he went to a home in Cairnlea, in Melbourne’s north-west, where he threatened innocent homeowners with knives and demanded their car keys.

Oh, and he was high on cocaine while this was going on.

So how did “The System” let this happen?

Judge Frank Gucciardo asked why hospital staff didn’t know he had relapsed.

‘He doesn’t tell them. They don’t screen him. There’s no system in place that allows for some control. It’s a bit disturbing,’ he said.

Because the honor system for paranoid schizophrenics seems like the perfect solution for keeping everyone safe. Or maybe not.

Civil War 2.0

That’s what the Left wants, apparently. Progressives Prepare To Cross The Rubicon

When Ben Franklin emerged from Constitution Hall in 1787 at the conclusion of the drafting of our Constitution, a woman is reputed to have asked him, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”. Franklin replied: “A Republic, if you can keep it.”

The Left doesn’t want a Republic. They want to rule by decree. From the Governor’s mansion of California, about electric autos, from the White House, with Obama and his pen, or from SCOTUS. They don’t want to follow the Constitution, because they know that they can’t change things via amendment.

“May you live in interesting times,” really is a curse.

The investigation continues.

Breaking the Sound Barrier

Chuck Yeager in front of Bell X-1October 14, 1947. Breaking the Sound Barrier | The Greatest Moments in Flight

A booming thunder roared across the clear skies of the Mojave Desert on Oct. 14, 1947, as U.S. Air Force Capt. Chuck Yeager nudged an experimental rocket-powered plane faster than the speed of sound. Though only a handful of people realized it at the time, an aviation record had been set.

The flight was kept classified until June of the following year.

The rocket plane, the Bell X-1, powered by 4 rocket engines was dropped from a B-29 Superfortress.

The photo above, courtesy of the USAF and Wikimedia Commons shows Yeager in front of the X-1. Click for a larger view and a bit more info.

Yeager retired from the Air Force as a Brigadier General in 1975.

There is a lot of good information at (the first link at the top), and I would love to copy lots of it. But if you’re interested, go take a look, at what Americans accomplished in the 1940s and 50s, and few words about the research going on today. Oh, and a nod to Tom Wolfe and The Right Stuff.

Who knows you might learn something. (It will only hurt for a minute!) Actually the whole series from is good. First balloon flight. The Wright Brothers. Lindbergh. etc.

I hate it when I miss anniversaries. The movie Hackers was released on September 15th, 1995. A limited edition vinyl copy of the soundtrack was released on the 26th of September, 2020 to commemorate.

That movie shows up in a lot of “Top Ten” lists of movies about hacking, though not all such lists. I haven’t seen it in a VERY long time, maybe since it came out, so I can’t tell you how well it has held up. Or not. Reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB seem to indicate it isn’t as popular as I remember it being when it came out, which is strange when you consider that it was the movie that pretty much launched Angelina Jolie’s career. IMDB says that her role just before that was as an uncredited extra in a music video, though she did have roles before that. (She is Jon Voight’s daughter, after all.)

This song is “Cowgirl” by Underworld. It was released in 1994, but most people would have tripped over it as part of the soundtrack to the 1995 movie Hackers.
