Any band that attracts the attention of Hans Giger can’t be all bad. Giger’s artwork graced the cover of this album, and the sleeve. What is featured here is a small part of a song that covered more than an entire side of an LP. I think this was the bit that got some radio time, but maybe I just heard a lot of it back-in-the-day.
This song is Karn Evil 9 1st Impression, Pt. 2 by Emerson, Lake and Palmer from their 1973 album Brain Salad Surgery‡. (Though this is actually the 2014 remastered edition.) It features some spectacular keyboard work by Emerson. If YouTube trips over the privacy settings in your browser, and tells you the video is “unavailable,” you should use the link provided. ‡ So how does a group publish an album with a title that’s a euphemism for oral sex? Either it was just the whole “Sex, Drugs, and Rock & Roll” era, or the suits that run the music industry are even more clueless than I give them credit for. Maybe they thought that if the “older generation” didn’t know what they were talking about, it would be OK.
