Walking Excavator Time-lapse

Walking excavators are a technology I find fascinating. How a 5,000 Ton Excavator “Walks” Away When Its Work Is Done.

The largest vehicles in the world won’t fit on any highway. They are the enormous bucket-chain and bucket-wheel excavators used in strip mining operations. These giant machines weigh thousands of tons and dwarf entire buildings.

Here’s a short time-lapse video of the excavator moving on its way out of the mine.

After the break is another video, or another version of this video. They are both fascinating in their own way.

  1. A number of years ago, drivers in Ohio were surprised to learn that the State of Ohio did not own the land that I-70 was built on. It merely had a temporary easement through land owned by a mining company, which could be cancelled whenever it was convenient for the company. So the company informed the State it was closing I-70 for a couple of days while it built a dirt ramp across the highway so it could move its giant drag line from one side of the highway to the other. I-70 is the main Interstate from the East Coast to the West Cost. Too damn bad. Coal is King.
